メアリー・ヘイズ－Mary Hays(1760-1843)－はMemoirs of Emma Courtney
(1796)、The
Victim of Prejudice (1799)などの小説の作者であると同時に、コールリッジ、サウジーら18世紀から19世紀にかけて多くの同時代知識人との交流でも英国文化・文学史に名を残しています。そのなかでもメアリー・ウルストンクラフトとの親交は特に知られています。二人の関係はウルストンクラフトのVindication
of the Rights of Woman (1792)に感激したヘイズが、執筆中のEssays, Moral and Miscellaneousへの助言をウルストンクラフトに求めたことに始まり、後にヘイズ家の茶話会でウルストンクラフトはウィリアム・ゴドウィンと運命的な出会いをします。両メアリーの交友は死の床にあったウルストンクラフトをヘイズが看病にあたるまで続きます。個人的友情だけでなくウルストンクラフトのフェミニズム思想から多大な影響を受けたヘイズは、女性の権利や職業、教育に関する戦闘的な発言、執筆活動に参加、ウルストンクラフトとならぶ英国フェミニズム草創期を代表する女性知識人となり、反フェミニスト達の揶揄や中傷の対象にもなってゆきます。
このような反フェミニスト側からの攻撃が激しさを増す頃出版された本書は、感情的になりがちな論争から距離をおき、客観的な視点で歴史における女性の役割を再考する意図で計画されました。約３年間を費やしヘイズ自身が全項目を書き下ろし、古代ギリシャ・ローマ時代から18世紀末まで、約290名（内約1/3が英国人）の人物伝がアルファベット順に収録されており、アフラ・ベーン、メアリー・アステルのような文学者も含まれます。その大半は１頁前後の小伝ですが、エカテリーナ２世、エリザベスⅠ世、スコットランド女王メアリ、マントノン夫人、ロラン夫人などの重要人物については100頁を超える評伝になっています。執筆にあたっての彼女の姿勢は、無味乾燥な史実の羅列をさけ、歴史書としてよりも同時代の女性の啓蒙を志し、男性中心の当時の歴史研究に一石を投じるものでした。その意味でも本書は世界で初めての「女性による、女性のための、女性についての」事典ともいえる記念碑的な書物です。
フェミニズムやジェンダー学を基盤とした歴史の読み直しが進む今日、女性史研究の原点とも言える本書を、人文・社会学全般の基本レファレンスとして広くお役立てください。

メアリ・ウルストンクラフトが女性の「理性」に期待をかけたフェミニストであっとすれば、その親友メアリ・ヘイズは、女性の「情念」に大きな意義を見いだしたフェミニストであったといえる。これまでウルストンクラフトの影に隠れてきたヘイズの存在は、その独創的な著述活動と特異な歴史的経験によって、近年新たな注目を集めつつある。
このたび復刻出版される本書は、ウルストンクラフト亡き後、ヘイズが保守派の集中的な攻撃にさらされるなかで執筆したものである。女性偉人を取りあげた書物は、イギリスではすでに18世紀中葉から見られるが、本書ほどの大著は過去に例がない。ヘイズがここで特に力を入れて描いたのは、クレオパトラからエカテリーナ２世にいたるまで、政治や哲学といった「男性的」とされる活動領域に比類のない情熱を傾けた女性たちであった。
本書を貫くのは、過去に生きた無数の女性たちが、ときには英雄的な活躍や悲劇的な受難によって歴史を動かしてきたことを証明しようとする強靭な意志である。女性史の意味を、その根源から問いかける古典的労作であることは間違いない。
