今日の英国文化や食生活に紅茶は最も重要な要素の一つとなっていますが、喫茶の習慣がこのように定着するまでには長い歴史のなかで様々な文化、経済、そして医学的論争を引き起こしてきました。17世紀初頭に東洋からヨーロッパにもたらされた茶は、オランダ経由で英国に紹介されたとされています。その後チャールズ2世の宮廷内で茶はあたらしい飲み物として広がりますが、その頃の一般市民にとってはまだそれは非常に貴重な薬の一種にすぎませんでした。宮廷内の茶の流行が、市民生活に普及し始めるのは17 世紀末から18世紀にかけてで、それにはイギリス東インド会社が茶の輸入に乗り出し、販売価格や茶税が大幅に引き下げられたことなど経済的要因も大きく寄与しています。
ココアやコーヒーとともに大流行した茶は、英国の食文化に革命的ともいえる影響を与え、それは一種の社会現象ともなります。その背景には刺激剤としての茶が、人々の生産性を向上させ、工業化を間近に控えたイギリスの時代の要請にあう飲み物であると受け入れられたことがあったとも考えられています。このような茶の日常化がある一方で、その大衆への浸透を危惧する反対論が巻き起こり、医学、経済、そして倫理的見地から茶を禁じようとする勢力も現れます。18世紀を通じ茶に対する賛否は様々な形で世に問われますが、この「茶論争」が終結に向かう19世紀になると、今日人々が接している嗜好飲料に近いイメージの茶文化が社会の中に定着してゆきます。

本文献集は、英語で出版された最初期の茶論から18世紀末までの実用書や茶論23点を集成します。ケンペルが『日本誌』の付録として発表した「日本の茶の話」、茶論争の出発点ともなった医師ショートの著名な茶論、友人への書簡の形式で茶を論じたメソジスト教会創始者ジョン・ウェスレーの文書、最も激しい反茶を論じた慈善事業家ジョナス・ハンウェイの著書とそれに対するジョンソン博士の痛烈な批判、今日も名の残る紅茶商トワイニングの茶貿易論、科学的見地から茶論争を収束させたレットサムの『茶の博物誌』など、著名な執筆者の茶論から今まで知られることのほとんどなかった実用書まで多様な文献が集められています。それらの大部分が現在古書でも手に入れることの極めて困難な稀覯書です。

近代英国が形成されるこの時代、異文化の一つとしての茶がどのように生活文化のなかに受け入れられていったのか、その過程への考察は、英国文化研究だけでなく東西文化交流のテーマとしても大変興味深いものです。英国研究者だけでなく、東西比較文化研究に携わる研究者の方々に広くお薦めいたします。(参考文献：滝口明子著『英国紅茶論争』講談社選書メティエ）

　１８世紀の文壇の大御所サミュエル・ジョンソン博士は、ロンドンに飽きた者は人生に飽きたのだ、と言ったと伝えられている。茶に飽きた者は人生に飽きたのだ、と言った人がいるとは聞いていないが、茶をぬきにしてイギリスは語れない。では、茶の木の栽培ができないこの国で、いつ頃からお茶は飲まれるようになったのであろうか。日本の茶道のようなセレモニーとして扱われたのであろうか。幾つかの史料には、茶は薬であったと書かれている。では、どのようにして嗜好品となり、喫茶の流行が生まれたのであろうか。このような疑問が次々とわいてくる。
　茶に関する研究書、一般書は数多く刊行されており、ある程度きちんとした答えが出されている。しかし、それが根本史料に基づいたものかどうか疑わしいものも少なくない。今回刊行される茶の文献は、第一級の根本史料集であると言っても過言ではない。
殆んど入手不可能であったものが多く、茶の歴史の研究者にとってなくてはならないものである。

　17世紀初めから現在まで，ヨーロッパにおける茶の歴史は400年を迎えようとしている。今回刊行される『茶の文化史：英国初期文献集』はその前半の200年間に英語で書かれた茶書を集成し復刻したものである。今後の茶の文化史研究に道を開く画期的な文献集と言ってよい。
　茶はもともと中国や日本を中心とする東洋の飲み物で，19世紀前半まではヨーロッパでも中国茶と日本茶が飲まれていた。19世紀後半になるとイギリスの植民地だったインドおよびスリランカにおける茶の生産が本格化する。この「アジア産のハーブ」が世界飲料となるに至ったのは，お茶好きになったイギリス人が「世界のどの大陸にでかけるにもお茶用のやかんを携えていったから」とされている。ではどのようにしてイギリス人はそれほどのお茶好きになったのだろう。
　その秘密を知る鍵がこの文献集には含まれている。収録した全24冊は，すべて茶について何かを語る本ではあるが，その語り口はバラエティに富んでいる。茶の讃歌もあれば医学的茶論もあり，茶税を論じた本や反茶論もあれば，茶とコーヒー，ココア，タバコの美味しい嗜み方と効能を述べた実用書も含まれている。
　執筆陣も豪華と言うほかない。徳川綱吉時代の日本に来て「日本の茶の話」を書いたドイツ人エンゲルベルト・ケンペル，18世紀宗教復興運動のパイオニアであるジョン・ウエスレー師，18世紀茶論争の立役者ジョナス・ハンウェイとイギリスのお茶好きを代表する茶文人ジョンソン博士，茶商として広く知られるリチャード・トワイニングなどなど。
　本書は，食文化史や文化史全般，英文学，東西交流史，比較文化史の資料としてもきらりと光る鉱脈を含んでいる。茶の文化史研究を志す人はもちろん，広範な読者に薦めたい。
