18世紀に成立をみる英国式庭園は、自然らしい自然を庭園の根幹にすえた自然風風景庭園でした。それまでの大陸で生まれた規則性、幾何学性、対称性を徹底して造型の根本とした整形庭園とは全く異なる庭園様式です。英国式庭園の特徴は、イギリスが数世紀にわたって培ってきたイギリス独自の自然観、すなわち自然が備えた不規則性、多様性、変化を自然の美しさの源泉とする自然観と、同様にイギリスで育まれた独自の精神性、つまり人間の五感で実際に体験したことを知識の根源とする経験主義が、形象化して生まれた造型の集積イディオムです。
英国式庭園は、18世紀にあって不変の単一した庭園様式ではありませんでした。18世紀初期のウィリアム・ケント(1685-1748)によって成立した初期英国式庭園は、ケントが画家であったことが影響して絵画性を重視した庭園でした。ケントの英国式庭園は、崇高、美に続く第3の美意識の範疇、自然風景に絵画性を求めたピクチャレスク美を確立したウィリアム・ギルピンに始まり、ユヴァディル・プライス、リチャード・ペイン・ナイトを継承者としたピクチャレスク・スクールから賞賛されました。しかし、ケントの庭園が絵画性を醸成するために廃墟、グロット、そして古典主義建築様式で作られた様々な庭園装飾を用いたのに対して、ケントの弟子であったランスロット・ケィパビィ
リティ・ブラウン(1716-83)は、こうした庭園装飾をできる限り排除し自然の風景そのものに庭園を造るランドスケープ重視の様式を確立し、ピクチャレスク派の人々はこれをよしとせず18世紀後半に庭園様式を巡る大論争が繰り広げられました。
今回刊行される『庭の文化史』は、英国式庭園の成立から展開に関わる貴重で入手困難な文献が集められます。ギルピンのピクチャレスク論は英国式庭園の傑作ストウ庭園に始まると申し上げれば、多くの皆さんがこの文献集成に深い関心をお持ちくださると思います。
