『１９世紀英国家庭と子どものための職業読本』
　 １９世紀のイギリス小説を読んでいて、たとえば窓のところにカーテンがどのようにつけられているのか、あるいは石鹸で手を洗う場面が出てきたとして、その石鹸はどのようなものか、もう一つよくわからないことがある。これは日本でも同じことで、子どもの頃に風邪を引いて喉が痛いと、吸入器で喉を湿らせたものだが、もちろん現代の若者にはこのようなものはわかりにくいはずである。

　１９世紀のイギリスでは産業革命の進行に伴って多くの職業が生まれ、あるいは新しい道具が誕生したのだが、そうした職業の詳しい内容や道具の種類、使い方を心得ておくことは、社会に出ようとする子どもや親たちにとって大いに関心のあることだった。今回復刻するのは、そうした職業に就こうとする子どもたちに向けて、平易な文章と適切な図版によって基本的なガイドをしようとするものである。その中には事典形式で職業万般の基本知識を紹介するものもあり、これがまた実に詳しく興味深い。船の帆や大砲がどのような構造になっているか、手に取るようにわかる。
