産業革命は英国における女性の職種を拡大させ、それまでの乳母やガヴァネスといっ
た限られた職業から、工場労働、荷役、清掃などから医療関係などのより専門性の高い職業まで、女性の労働力が社会の様々な分野で求められるようになりました。この働く女性たちの姿は、チャールズ・ディケンズ、エリザベス・ギャスケルらによる19世紀英国小説にたびたび登場しますが、女性の職業や労働環境、職業訓練や教育等は当時の英国でも社会の重要な問題として論じられています。
本文献集は、この女性と職業に関する同時代の特徴的な文献を選び復刻し、英国19世紀文化・文学研究、女性史研究の資料としてご提供するものです。著名な女性解放論者ジョゼフィン・バトラーの著したパンフレットや、彼女がフランセス・コッブ、ジェイムス・スチュアート、ジョージ・バトラー（彼女の夫）らの著述を編集した論集、よりよい職業を目指す女性のためのハンドブック、19世紀末に労働省が行った調査報告と統計、ロンドンの職業養成協会がまとめた女性のためのガイド（男性のためのガイドも同時収録）など計11点の文献を収録いたします。
