独立革命以来二百数十年、アメリカは共和国を支える市民を育てることに力を注いできた。ヨーロッパ出身の中産階級の国民に始まり、各地からの移民をアメリカの良き市民にする努力は今日まで続いている。その市民教育のために、行儀作法、生活の仕方、教訓などを示した様々な指南書が利用されてきた。19世紀にはコンダクト・ブックとよばれる書物が盛んに出版され、主として中産階級の少年・少女たちは家庭や学校でこれらの読み物を通して、アメリカ市民のあるべき姿を教えられ成長していった。この『アメリカ19世紀の少年・少女のためのコンダクト・ブック』シリーズは、19世紀初めから中頃にかけて書かれた著作を復刻したものであり、当時の著名な教育者、作家による少年・少女向けの物語や逸話、詩を含めた長編や短編からなっている。これらの作品を読むと、当時の市民教育のテーマとして、家族、教育、キリスト教、男女の相違、非西欧世界への優越感が浮かび上がってくるだろう。独立革命以来アメリカ人を支配してきた市民像の内容が明らかにされ、キリスト教道徳観が貫く中で、家族の重要さ、教育の有用性、ジェンダー、非西欧世界に対する優越ないし差別意識が示されている。19世紀にこうしたコンダクト・ブックの教育を受けて中産階級が成長し、その後中産階級がアメリカ社会の主流となってきたことを考えると、最近までアメリカ社会・国家を動かしてきた価値観も良く理解される。
本シリーズは、直接的には19世紀の子供の教育や児童文学を研究するための一次資史料のように見えるが、その意味はさらに広い。当時の生活、また、現在に至るまでのアメリカ市民の意識およびその形成過程を、一般国民の側から知る手がかりとなり、アメリカ史、社会史研究にとって有益な一次史料となっている。
