アメリカでの看護はナイチンゲールの元で学んだ、リンダ・リチャーズやイザベル・ハンプトンにより19世紀後半に近代化されて行きましたが、その後世界で最も早く看護職の専門養成機関が広がり、20世紀には大学での看護教育が開始されます。それに伴い看護学生のための教科書や手引き、看護学研究のための学術書や資料が数多く出版されるようになります。1980年代にはそれらを幅広くリプリントしたGarland
History of Nursingシリーズが刊行、アメリカ大学学部、大学院での看護学研究、教育の基礎文献として活用されますが、残念ながら、日本国内の教育機関や大学図書館でこのリプリント叢書はほとんど所蔵されることなく、今日絶版となってしまっています。
今回の復刻コレクションは、このシリーズに収録された文献のなかで、今日でもその重要性を失っていない12点のタイトルを、当初のシリーズ編集者でもあったSusan M. Reverby (Professor of Women's
Studies, Wellesley College) の協力にて厳選、全8巻セットで再刊するものです。看護学史研究や看護教育に必携であるだけでなく、アメリカ女性史研究の資料としても極めて貴重で広範な文献集です。
