19世紀末か20世紀初頭の日本の近代化を見つめた西洋女性宣教師(宣教師の妻など宣教活動の周辺に身を置いた女性も含む)による、日本関連書の復刻出版シリーズの第2回配本です。
英米プロテスタントの海外伝道事業が組織化されていった19世紀後半から20世紀初頭にかけ、多くの女性宣教師が日本含むアジア諸国へ派遣されましたてゆきます。彼女たちは、各地で男性宣教師とは異なる社会的役割をにない活動を行いますが、日本においてもミッション・スクールの設立や運営に深く関わり、日本・アジアでの女性の教育の成立に大きく貢献したことが知られています。教育者でもあった女性宣教師に課された重要な仕事の一つにの内には、自分の宣教活動や体験を本国で伝道事業を支える女性たちに知らせるということがありました。そうした報告の一部は書籍となり、広く流通しましたが、活動の記録と同時に滞在した日本の文化や生活を、女性ならではの視線で記述し残した者も多く、それらは今日、日本の近代キリスト教史の史料としてだけではなく、教育史、女性史、など幅広い日本の近代化や西洋との文化接触の歴史、またジェンダー研究、英米帝国史研究のための文献として読み直されています。
第2回配本中では、中国でのプロテスタント宣教に大きな功績を残したJohn Livingstone Neviusの妻Helenが、夫とともに訪れた日本の旅行記。横浜共立学園を設立したMary Pruynがアメリカの3人の孫たちに宛てた手紙という形式で著された日本生活記、長老教会の宣教師として8年間日本で活動したJulia Carrothersが、日本の女の子と男の子を主人公に庶民の生活を語った著作、東北学院第2代院長Schnederの妻が語る仙台神学校での女子教育に協力したMiyamoto O Muraの生涯等々、計13点の著作を多くの図版も含め収録します。
