| 19世紀末に科学的研究分野として確立した音声学は、20世紀に入ると前世紀の多岐に亘った研究が集約されその完成期を迎えます。特に英語音声学はヘンリー・スウィートらが築いたイギリス学派 (British School of Phonetics) がその発展の中心的役割を果たし、なかでもジョーンズ式音声表記法を作ったダニエル・ジョーンズの功績は今日でも広く知られ、著作も多くがリプリント版などで出版され続けています。
今回のコレクションでは、ジョーンズ周辺のイギリス学派の著作を中心に、今日入手の難しい文献を多数収録します。音声学は実践に関わる研究であるというこの学派の主張を表し、英語教育、特に非英語圏の学習者にとっての発音の問題、英語発音辞典の編集、英語方言、イギリス英語とアメリカ英語の相違、イントネーション研究と実践、BBC英語と称される発音の標準化とメディアの関係など、現実社会と英語に関わる様々な問題が扱われており、それらは全世界で英語が使用されることになった今日、さらに重要なテーマとなっています。
