●新世紀に入り国際政治や商業・貿易だけでなく、ビジネスの投資先としても重要度が増していた中国及びその周辺東アジア諸国に関する、当時最新の情報を網羅し多数の写真や図表とともに収録。
●同出版社による『図説百科　近代日本とその植民地 - Present-Day Impressions of Japan』(小社より復刻版既刊）と合わせ、２百科で当時最大の東アジア情報源となるよう企画され、1917年にロンドンとシカゴで刊行。
●各国、各都市の歴史、地理、動植物、教育、宗教、文化、法律、政治、産業の詳説に加え、英字新聞社記者や商工会議所などの協力を得て、医療、治安、労働、交通など社会、生活に関する記述や各種統計も充実。
●特に各地に進出していた、欧米や日本の商社、銀行、新聞、船舶業、製造業の活動については、支社の社屋やオフィス、駐在員や現地従業員の写真など、広く紙面を割いて紹介。
●第２次大戦で失われてしまった、街並みや駅、港など公共建築物の貴重な写真に加え、政界、実業界で活躍した人物肖像写真も満載。
●東アジア近代史、産業・経営・社会経済史、都市・建築史、比較文化学等広く研究、教育用の資料として利用可能。
