女性の「美とファッション」というテーマは、女性の身体性の変遷といった視点からだけでなく、文化史学や美学における「理想とする女性の美しさ」、社会経済史や産業史における「ファッション産業とその消費者としての女性」、医学史における「健康と身体美」、そして教育史での「女性の身体教育」など、異なる分野で極めて広範に研究が展開されています。本資料集は、女性の社会進出とともに女性の美しさとファッションの概念が大きく変わっていった英国19世紀〜20世紀初頭を対象に、この時代出版された多様な立場の著者による文献を幅広く収録、本テーマへの横断的なアプローチを可能にすることを目的に編集される復刻文献集です。
全体を“Personal Beauty and Care”、 “Beauty, Fashion and Health” 、 “Beauty Education and Self-Management”という3つの大項目に分類し、各テーマ年代順に文献を配列することにより、参政権運動など女性史に沿いながら、それぞれの時代の女性の美やファッションに対する意識や社会通念の変化を、同時代の文献で追ってゆきます。
今まで紹介されたことのないパンフレットや稀覯文献を多数含み、女性史だけでなく、家政学（服飾史）、教育史（女性教育）から経済史、文学・文化史研究に大変有用な一次資料集です。
