東洋学の発展において、英国・アイルランド王立アジア協会 The Royal Asiatic Society
of Great Britain and Ireland （1823年設立）の果たした大きな役割についてはもはや贅言を要すまい。同協会の学術出版物としては、今日、第三シリーズを迎えた
Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain
and Ireland があまりにも有名である。さらに同協会は、Oriental Translation Fund
シリーズ（1829年開始）をはじめとする単行書のシリーズによって、多くのすぐれた研究を世に送ってきた。これらのシリーズの主な内容は、中国・インド・西アジアなど東洋諸地域の古典の翻訳である。翻訳にあたった研究者の国籍は、英国にとどまらず、独仏にも及び、それぞれの時代の東洋学の巨星が名を連ねている。したがってこれらのシリーズは、英国のみならず全欧州の東洋学の軌跡を映し出しているとも言えるだろう。そしてその中には、時を経てなお、それに代わる新たな翻訳がいまだ現れず、学問的価値を失わぬものが少なくない。また、ごく一部ではあるが、翻訳とともに原典テキストを併載し、一次史料研究としてさらに高い価値を備えたものもある。たしかに、その後の研究により、厳しい批判にさらされたり、原著の位置付けさえ変わったりしたものも少なくない。とはいえ、批判の論点の確認、研究史の回顧のためには、それらもなお参照の余地があろう。いずれにせよ、これらシリーズの出版物には、長らく復刊されずに、稀覯本と化したものが少なくないのである。
本叢書は、こうした稀覯書のうちから、イスラーム研究にかかわるものを選択、復刊するものである。四期にわたる本叢書では、Oriental
Translation Fund シリーズのやり方にならい、1. Theology, Ethics, and
Metaphysics; 2. History, Geography, and Travels; 3. Belles-Lettres
の分類を設けた。さらに、英国のインド統治を反映して、特に２の分類にはインド・イスラームにかかわる著作が多いので、これらについては別に分類を立てて、2-a.
History, Geography, and Travels (India) として、全四分類とした。
今期復刊の 1. Theology, Ethics, and Metaphysics は、数学、倫理学、暦学、哲学、イスラーム神秘主義、ハディース学などの古典の翻訳からなる。翻訳者には、ドイツのイスラーム学の巨星
C.E. Sachau (1945-1930), イスラーム神秘主義研究の泰斗 R.A. Nicholson
(1868-1945) などの大家も名を連ねる。また、全八点のうち四点が、翻訳とともに原典テキストを備えている点は特筆される。長らく入手の困難であったこれらの著作の参照が容易になることは、研究者に裨益するところが大きいであろう。
