19世紀から20世紀初頭に編集された英語俗語の辞書、語彙集７点の復刻集成です。英語の標準化が進む以前のこの時代には、様々なグループや地方に特有の俗語が現在よりはるかに多く使用されており、教育や出版の大衆化にともない、これらの俗語に対する関心や一般に知らしめる動きが盛んになりました。本集成では、Francis Grose, John Camden Hottenらによる代表的は俗語辞典に加え、ケンブリッジで使用されていた日常表現の辞書、パブリック・スクール俗語のガイドなど、小冊子で出版され今では手に入れることの非常に困難な文献を中心に収録しています。

英語史研究を始め、19世紀英国文学、社会史、教育史研究にも利用価値の高い基本文献集です。
